OUR HOBBIES

I am interested to work with my dogs almost what ever they seem to be interested of. Unfortunately time doesn't always keep up with us. I am not the most competitive person so instead I try to have fun with the dogs, official results are second in my list. It has been very interesting to learn about the mental capacity of my dogs throw working with them and training them is just the right therapy to get my thoughts away from work. Because every dog is an individual, they also require different things to work successfully. What goes with one, doesn't necessary work with the other. In addition, dogs learn in different speed and are in different place in their training. For that reason I try to write down every lesson with them using a three phase form: aim, realization and feedback. This way I am trying to move ahead with the training instead of just staying in one place. Training several dogs takes time and little looser attitude towards the results. The spirit of the dog, working together and having good experiences are the key elements of learning.

I have been educating myself by studying first two phases of  Koirakoulu Visio years 2009-2010. It is a private school for everyone wanting to learn how to train animals and they use mainly American behaviour specialists Bob Baileys way to teach. Bailey's philosophical point of view on teaching animal training is that training is a mechanical skill and the understanding and skilful practicing of a few simple behavioural principles are keys to trainer success. It is my intention to learn even more about the dog behaviour also from the ethology point of view. I try to encourage all my puppy owners to work with their dogs. The spiritual bond between dog and human is far more than simple and teaching your dog can prevent all kind of problems right from the start.

 OBEDIENCE:

Obedience competition provides an opportunity for a person and a dog to work as a highly tuned team. Training for obedience trials can provide much needed mental stimulation and physical activity for a bored housepet, and provide a fun and challenging hobby for the dog's owner. At the moment I am training obedience with Bilbo, Brego and Rosie.

An obedience trial is a dog sport in which a dog must perfectly execute a predefined set of tasks when directed to do so by his handler.  Training a dog to participate in obedience trials increases a dog's understanding and reliability in responding to commands such as "sit", "down", "stay", "come", and "heel." At a trial, the dog and handler will perform various predefined obedience exercises, which will be evaluated and scored by a judge. The dog must demonstrate basic proficiency in order to receive a passing score. A handler may choose to train for higher degrees of accuracy and style in order to receive more points. For example, on a recall, to receive a perfect score the dog must come at a trot or run directly to the handler, without sniffing or veering to one side, and sit straight in front of the handler, not at an angle or off to one side or the other.

 AGILITY:

Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. Dogs run off-leash with no food or toys as incentives, and the handler can touch neither dog nor obstacles. Consequently the handler's controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal and coordination of the handler.

In its simplest form, an agility course consists of a set of standard obstacles, laid out by an agility judge in a design of his or her own choosing on a roughly 100 by 100-foot (30 by 30 m) area, with numbers indicating the order in which the dog must complete the obstacles.

Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete them correctly without human direction. In competition, the handler must assess the course, decide on handling strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs and handlers.

At the moment I am training and competing agility with Mette, Ramses, Hugo and the young puppies. I am also teaching agility in a local association.

 TRACKING:

Tracking is a technique in which dogs are trained to locate certain objects, such as a downed bird, using the object's scent. Many bird and rabbit hunters train their dogs in tracking. The scent hounds are generally regarded as having the best tracking abilities among all dog breeds.

In dog sports, there are tracking competitions. For us tracking is mostly harmless track of human steps which the dog is supposed to follow. This is a good exercise for most of smooth collies and they tend to enjoy it.

 HERDING:

From the year 2008 I have been working herding with my collies. As a breeder, I am most interested about the original functions dogs has to have to work at the pasture. With it, I have been bitten by a larger bug ;) From the wishes of crowing number of enthusiastic people, including several breeders of rough and smooth collies, Finnish Collie Association decided to carry out an official test for measuring herding capacity of modern rough and smooth collies. I am member of workgroup which is developing this test.

My dreams is to have more livestock right here at home, but mainly our sheep would be deeply loved members of our family, just like my goats are at the moment. Welcome to share the exciting world of herding! Look at also my page for sheeps & herding and herding fanpage at facebook.

DOGSHOWS:

Conformation shows, also referred to as breed shows, are a kind of dog show in which a judge familiar with a specific dog breed evaluates individual purebred dogs for how well the dogs conform to the established breed type for their breed, as described in a breed's individual breed standard.

A conformation dog show is not a comparison of one dog to another but a comparison of each dog to a judge's mental image of the ideal breed type as outlined in the individual breed's breed standard. Dog show judges attempt to identify dogs who epitomize the published standards for each breed. This can be challenging, because some judgements must necessarily be subjective. As an example, what exactly entails a "full coat" or a "cheerful attitude", descriptions found in breed standards, can only be learned through experience with the breed that has that particular requirement. The first modern conformation dog show was held in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England in June 1859, and the only breeds scheduled were pointers and setters.

Dogshows were my first touch of dog hobbies. They are also a social event as I usually meet friends and other familiar faces. The most thrilling thing for me is to participate with the dog who really enjoy all the attention like my Rosie or Ramses.
