OUR CATS

The cat (Felis catus), also known as the domestic cat or housecat to distinguish it from other felines and felids, is a small carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. It has been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years and is currently the most popular pet in the world. A skilled predator, the cat is known to hunt over 1,000 species for food. It can be trained to obey simple commands. Individual cats have also been known to learn on their own to manipulate simple mechanisms, such as doorknobs and toilet handles.

Cats use a variety of vocalizations and types of body language for communication, including meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, squeaking, chirping, clicking, and grunting. They are also bred and shown as registered pedigree pets. This hobby is known as cat fancy. Until recently the cat was commonly believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt, where it was a cult animal. A study in 2007 found that the lines of descent of all house cats probably run through as few as five self-domesticating African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) circa 8000 BC, in the Near East. The earliest direct evidence of cat domestication is a kitten that was buried with its owner 9,500 years ago in Cyprus.

Our cats live inside the house, but they also get to walk freely outside. Although they are here to keep the mouses and rats away from the ranch, they also are very important par of my extended family. All my cats like to talk a lot and at least what I've been told, they behave like little dogs most of the time. When I am calling them they come and and when I am walking they usually follow me, running in dogs feet's. I couldn't imagine life without my cats!

"Symppis Sipponen"  Photos

Male, born november 2008

Breed: Af Ládugård

Symppis moved to us as 10 week old kitten. I do not know why, but fall 2008 I had a sudden need for a another cat. After couple of months search I finally found him. He is totally black, not a white hair on him, and loves to cuddle and kiss. Unfortunately he managed to live with my older cat Komppis only for a week after I lost Komppis in an accident. Symppis is very brave and social cat - just like Komppis was. When I had him the people I got him from said he was a she - a girl. But after couple of months it came clear that Symppis is in fact very much of a boy! I am calling his alter ego "Jack Sparrow" as he is indeed a man with a strong personality. Symppis has quite big territory around the house, and he walks it around every day. He has never been away from home longer than 48 hours and usually he runns towards me when I am back from work. He is the true lord of our ranch, a sweet boy of my dreams!

Bitch, born 23.10.2008

Breed: Af Ládugård

Bestis moved to us from near by town Raisio 27.12.2008. She has just been with us for couple of days. Right now she is making trust bonds with everybody. I was so pleased that she came friends with Symppis so soon and are now inseparable. Bestis is really brave and has already made close contact with smooth collie puppies. She likes to purr a lot, but isn't as much as a lap cat as Symppis is. Bestis is really calm and easygoing cat and likes to stay inside the house. She follows me everywhere and as it turn out to be, is a superb mother! "Bestis" is a Finnish word for best friend.

Sire: Symppis Sipponen

Maximus is Moms little boy. Kind, open and playful he is following his fathers footprints to become true lord of the household. Maximus is the oldest child of Symppis & Bestis and they are still taking care of him. Usually Maximus follows me around and loves to cuddle and kiss. He also sleeps in my bed or somewhere near. At the moment he has never wondered too far from the house.

Female, born May/June 2010

Breed: Af Ládugård

Owner: Sirja L. & Hanna N.

This little lady came to us little surprisingly in early of September 2010. I had been thinking of taking a fourth cat, but not at this fall. But when a good friend of mine called and said there is still available kittens I could not resist. The newcomer has a name from the LOTR, Ril, witch roughly means spark.
